Tips For Decorating A Bed & Breakfast

By: Patti Rob

The decor of your bed & breakfast is very important. It is going to influence people and play a huge role in their decision to stay with you. It will also affect their decision to come back again or to recommend your bed & breakfast location to other people. If you want to get plenty of business from locals in the area, you need to have a very nice outside dcor so that they will want to find out more about what is behind the front door.

You want your bed & breakfast to appear to be warm and inviting. If people aren't happy with what they initially see, it can discourage them from making the reservation. The outside of your bed & breakfast is the first thing they are going to see. Choose warm colors that compliment each other. If the paint is worn or it is peeling you need to take the time to have it redone.

Take some time to focus on your porch area and the yard as well. Place some chairs and even a few small tables if you have the room on the porch. This way people can enjoy the outdoors on a nice evening. If you have grass it needs to be cut often and very green. If this isn't possible due to drought conditions or other factors, consider landscaping with colorful rocks. A beautiful fountain is attractive as well and they don't cost very much to install.

One easy and inexpensive way to light up the decor of the front of your bed & breakfast is to offer a flower garden. Choose those that are colorful and have a good chance of blooming to their fullest in your area. You can place vases of these fresh flowers in various locations indoors as well.

Too many bed & breakfast owners make the mistake of over decorating the inside of the business. If you have too many items on display it is hard to focus on them all. It can easily make the guests feel overwhelmed. At the same time it can make the place look smaller than it really is. Take your time to offer rooms with walls that are painted inviting colors. Look for pictures that are very appealing such as those of the ocean, waterfalls, lighthouses, and others that people tend to relate with relaxing and calm.

You may be surprised at home much influence a set of curtains can have for any room in your bed & breakfast. Try out various types until you find the right look that will soften up the room and make it look very inviting. If they are sheer, offer a blind or a pull down shade for privacy as well.

Think about the theme you want to offer throughout the bed & breakfast. Everything needs to be a good match with the other items around it. This takes a good eye for home decorating so if you aren't sure ask others to give you their input. You can even consider hiring a professional designer to help you get everything in place.

While you have the freedom to decorate your bed & breakfast any way you want, it is important to remember that it needs to reflect the needs of your customers. This is very different than when you are decorating your own home because that is specifically for your own comfort.
