Tidbits of Advice for Pet Owners

By: Hal Stormi

I highly recommend adding a pet to your family, even it if is just you. They are simply tremendous, but you have to make sure you understand their needs for it to be a good two way relationship. With that in mind, here are some tips to make you a good pet owner.

1. Dog Urine in Carpet – If your dog can’t hold it anymore, don’t get to angry. You can get the urine out without much problem. Mix sudsy water with lemon juice and blot the carpet

2. Antifreeze and Cats – When winter hits, you need to be careful with leaving antifreeze around. Cats love it for some reason, but even a tiny amount can kill them.

3. Dry Dog Wash – If you don’t have time to give your dog a bath and they smell bad, you can give them a rub down with baking soda to take the edge off.

4. Pets Marking Territory – If your pet urinates in the house, clean it up right away. Make sure to get the smell out or your pet will come back and do it again to mark its territory.

5. Giving Aspirin to Cats – Aspirin is a wonder drug, but don’t give it to cats. They react really poorly to it and it can even kill them.

6. Skunk Odors on Dogs – Inquisitive dogs often pay the price with skunks. To get skunk smell off, wash your dog with tomato juice. Then wash them with regular shampoo and rinse. You might have to do it twice.

7. Pain Killer Misunderstandings – Just because your pet is now on painkillers does not mean he is back to normal. The medication is relieving the pain, not curing the problem. Don’t assume they are ready to be active again.

8. Exotic Pet Problems – It may seem like a good idea to get a unique pet, but be warned. They have unique needs and you may be surprised how much maintenance there is.

9. Pets In Pools – Throwing a ball into a pool for a pet to chase is a favorite pastime. Swimming is good for their hips, but watch their fur. It can dry out the skin because of the clorine.

10. Dog Sits Down Suddenly – A dog that sits down suddenly is hurt. He or she has a problem with their back hips. They often will not make a sound, but will refuse to move. See a vet immediately.

Whether you are getting a dog, cat or something more exotic, understanding the needs of your pet is good place to start. Although we all tend to lend human qualities to our pets, they are not human. Make sure you take care of them based on knowledge.
