Looking At Schools For Your Vending Machine Business

By: Robert Farnham

If you are considering approaching schools to put in your vending machines, you need to be prepared for some issues. There are plenty of opinions out there about if they even belong in a school or not. If you talk to parents, teachers, and students you will find a mixture of different takes on the issue. For anyone with a vending machine business, you can't help but think of the possibilities for large revenues here though.

There is plenty of statistics to look at regarding vending machine use in schools. More than of students from 7th through 12th grade acknowledge buying items from school vending machines on a regular basis. Their parents aren't aware that they do this with the money they give them for activities and school lunches.

As a result, many parents of overweight children are blaming the schools for the problems. They claim they feed their child nutritious meals at home and provide them with money to eat at school. These parents are advocating for schools to remove vending machines altogether to eliminate the temptation and the development of bad eating habits.

Many schools are attempting to meet parents and vending machine owner's half way. The machines aren't accessible during the lunch period so that if a student wants to eat they have to get something nutritious from the school. Still, many schools quickly find those students that live close by or that have a car go eat what they want from a local store or a drive up window.

If you are dealing with a school that doesn't have too many issues going on, you may have a prime location for a vending machine. Since many children don't have time for breakfast in the morning or it is a long stretch for them from lunch to the end of the day, vending machines offer them a solution.

To meet the requirements of the school though you may have to agree to stock the vending machine with approved items. They many want to steer clear of unhealthy choices so that students will be encouraged to make a better selection. This means you will want to offer water and juice instead of soda. Think of healthy snacks that offer kids energy instead of sugar.

Too many vending machine owners are very afraid this scenario is going to ruin their business. In most cases though it won't because you are going to find schools have plenty of hungry students. Athletes often need extra food to get them through the day and everyone is too rushed to eat in the morning sometimes.

You may find it is easier to persuade a school to allow you to place vending machines in the schools if you are able to offer healthy snacks. They definitely don't want to deal with any problems from teachers or parents over what students have access to. Make sure your sales pitch includes how offering such healthy foods and drinks for students will help them focus on their studies instead of on their hunger.
