Words don’t do justice to the horror of what biofuel will mean to this planet
Of the earth's 6.66 billion residents, 4 billion live in poverty, and those at the bottom of that group are already very skinny and without sufficient food to be able to function normally. Many of these poorest people are to be sacrificed in the name of highly questionable alternative energy sources which don’t even help improve the environment. Just a total loss across the boards for everyone but a few politicians and a few corporations The estimates are 10 to 20 million dead in 2008 alone! This is urgent, folks, and all but invisible!
Even in our “shining city on the hill”, the land of pastures of plenty and amber waves of grain, the lowest class poor people including the homeless but also veterans, elderly and, really anyone below the “Mendoza line” financially speaking are facing a rougher go than ever because of our new "GREEN" policies, which John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama currently support.
The USDA states that by the end of May, US wheat supplies will be lower than at any time since 1948 because so many wheat farmers switched to growing corn for biofuel. And the pendulum does not swing back in this case. US farmers ARE planting more wheat this year but because of the demand for corn for food and energy this will result in dramatic increases in food prices across the globe next year.
Biofuels are a dead end technology that can only lead to more human misery, hunger, and environmental destruction no matter what biofuel crops we grow. In 2006 corn was on the market at only $2/bushel, but expanding ethanol production has pushed corn prices up to over $6 a bushel today which raises the price of chicken, eggs, beef, and dairy products, as corn is our main animal feed. In the year 2007, the USA alone turned enough corn, soybeans, and rapeseed into biofuels to satisfy the yearly caloric needs of over 250 million people. The World Bank states that staple food prices have increased by an incredible 80% in the 3 year period from 2005 to 2008 and 33 nations now face political instability as a result. There have been food riots in at least 20 different countries, even in wealthy Italy. In Haiti, some of the poor have resorted to eating cookies made of mud! The food riots in Haiti have looked more like revolution than just demand for food.
There is no safe way to make biofuels in sufficient quantity to have any significant positive effect on our economy. Many independent studies from agencies, universities, etc show that ethanol from cellulose (switchgrass, wood chips, crops waste, etc.) will never be cost effective. Affordable biodiesel fuel from algae is a pipe dream that has wasted research money since the 1970s. In addition to the effects on the world food supply, using corn as a source for ethanol takes so much use of other energy sources that it is not even 1/5th as efficient as fossil fuel and instead it is a killer of people and a hazard to the environment.
Scores of scientific studies from respected authorities have demonstrated that results from biofuel generation include torture of wildlife, destruction of the biosphere and faster global warming.
There is so much evidence that biofuel is a disastrous "solution" to the Earth and its inhabitants, that one wonders who promotes it still. Obviously, not anyone with humanity's best interests at heart.
Meanwhile the real solutions are occurring at the grassroots level. Water4Gas is one of the best.
