Heat and Cool Your House For Less

By: Andrew John

Whether you are worried about your electricity bills because of your family's budget or environmental impact, you can do a lot to improve your situation. The houses are the second place where the energy is wasted - only our cars are "better" when it comes to wasting energy. Fortunately unlike in case of cars, we can do a lot to make our houses more energy-efficient.

Here's the first step: make sure that all your doors and windows can be really closed tight. If not, order to repair them or seal the leaks yourself. Your objective is to eliminate all drafts you can. If a cold air can't get in, you will not lose energy heating it. Another important thing is either insulating your cellar too, or at least making the cellar doors well-insulated to prevent cold from entering your house from the ground.

Keeping both heating and cooling system in a good shape is essential to minimizing your energy bills. Many furnaces have about 85% efficiency when they're brand new, but it quickly goes down unless you maintain them regularly. The same goes for cooling systems - coolant leaks and clogged filters can make your bills skyrocket unless you spot them soon enough. If heating or cooling system is obsolete (15 years or more), it is usually a good idea to replace it with something new. The installation costs will be returned in the lower energy bills in two years maximum.

Make sure your thermostat is placed well away from the hottest and coldest areas of your house. Otherwise you risk it acting on the false reading and excessively heat or cool the house, causing terrible energy loss. Make sure your thermostat is Energy Star rated one - they are usually optimized for energy use reduction. They can save you around $100 a year.

Two last tips. First, if you want to have fireplace, remember that it should be used only for really special occasions. For one, an open chimney may cost a house more heat than the fire may provide. A fireplace insert is probably much better solution. Second, you may want to install a heat pump. It works extremely well in spring and fall when the temperatures are not extreme enough to start heating or cooling the house without terrible energy losses.
