Probably the best thing you can do to speed up an older computer is to run the defragmentation program that is built into your computer. You don't even have to worry about installing a new program because it is already there. Microsoft includes it with your computer. The only responsibility that you have is to run it periodically. Running the defragmentation program will make your disk run quicker.

While the defrag program will organize the files on your hard drive in a more efficient and effective manner you should then also run the program that checks for bad sectors on your hard drive. Bad sectors on your hard drive will slow down your computer's access to the hard drive. Running this bad sector utility will help you by repairing bad sectors or instructing the computer to work around them effectively.

Also consider investing in some software to protect your computer from invasion of spyware. Spyware is software that unethical marketers manage to sneak on to your computer that spies on you and reports back to the merchant. Along with exposing your personal information the very process of reporting back to the merchant slows down your computer. You can take advantage of one of the many free anti-spyware programs available on the Internet or increase your protection a notch or two by investing $30 or $40 in a corporate level program that is surer to protect you against invasion.

Another thing that you will want to seriously consider is going into your control panel and clicking on the list of programs that are installed on your computer. You will find some programs that were installed by the manufacturer that you have never used and have no intention of using. Tell the computer to uninstall them. Then take a second look at your list of programs and see if there are some programs installed on your computer by you that you have not used in the last year or two. Whenever you find one go ahead and tell the computer to uninstall it. Eliminating these files will free up more space on your hard drive thus making it quicker to run programs and also to start up.

This next tip will probably cost you in the range of $50-$100 but if you spend a significant amount of time on your computer and have been frustrated at how slowly it is running then it will be a very wise decision indeed. Find out how much random access memory your computer is running with at this time. Perhaps the easiest way is simply to open up the instruction book that came with your computer. If you are a complete and total novice simply write down the name and model number of your computer and take it to your local store that stocks memory sticks. You will find many of the largest chain stores sell these memory sticks. Just ask the salesperson there to determine what kind of memory you need and how much you can add to your computer then take that memory stick home and in 10 minutes time you will discover that you can easily install it yourself.

These are just some of the things that you can do to speed up your computer. Several of them you should just consider to be routine maintenance steps that you performe periodically.
