Choosing The Correct Office Chair

By: A.M. Allmark

I bet you have no idea how long you'll be sat in your office chair for this week. will it be 10 hours? 20 hours? I bet if you worked it out you'd be very surprised. How long did you spend choosing that chair? If you are like most people you probably just grabbed the nearest one and sat in it. If you were choosing a chair for home I bet you'd spend much more time finding just the right one and yet you'll probably spend less than half the time in that chair during the week as you will in your office chair.

One of the main problems most of us have with our chairs at work is that we inherit them from the person who had our desk before us. It makes no difference if they were larger or smaller than us we have to make do with them. However there are some things you can do to make things better.

You'll first need to test the chair and make sure all the adjustments work properly. Don't persevere with a chair that can't be fully adjusted. The most important adjustment is the back support, always ensure that you can find a position that support your back. Once the back position is correct you should then adjust the arms so that they are comfortable and finally the height.

It never ceases to amaze me how many employers don't pay attention to the condition of their office chairs. It's well known that old and poorly adjusted office chairs are a major source of back problems. These problems can result in hundreds of lost working ours through people needeing time off. If you are an employer it will benefit you in the long run to ensure that your staff are sitting comfortably.

There are an number of points to be considered before you buy a new office chair

1. Can it be adjusted

2. Is it leather or fabric

3. How is it made

If you are buying a chair just for yourself you might be able to get away with a chair that has a small range of adjustment. Howerver if it is going to be used by a number of different people then you should look at buying a chair with a larger range of adjustments in all areas.

Chairs can be made of many different types of material. The most popular are leather and mesh. They both have their advantages but overall meah chairs are usually better. Leather can get very hot and it provides very little ventilation on warm days. Mesh also has a level of flexibility built in which can be more comfortable for the user.

Office chairs can be constructed in many ways. Some come with high backs and others with low backs. You may find ones with headrests incorporated into the construction. How the front of the chair is constructed can have an big effect on the support a user gets. Once again the style of the arm rests can play a big part in the overall comfort of the chair. Bearing in mind all these factors it would be wise to test any chair thoroughly before buying.
