The average cost of a gallon of fuel decreased a wee bit from record levels Tuesday and some car owners saved a few pennies, but but the government curtailed the celebration by announcing that fuel prices could rise as high as $4 per gallon this Summer.

The agency also predicted that fuel consumption will fall during the peak Summer months due to the rise in prices which will come about because of increased useage during the Summer months. The agency previously said petroleum consumption would rise by 40,000 barrels a day.
Consumption has already gone down for the first time in decades with the decrease increasing since the start of the year.
The chilling effect certainly has something to do with the fact that fuel prices are 55 cents higher than this time last year
Crude oil's rise above $100 earlier this year is the main reason fuel prices have been rising. Crude futures rose to a trading record of $111.80 last month, and have since traded in a range between about $100 and $110.
